What do we Really Need as a Family?

1. The Non-Negotiables (survival + dignity)

These are the things life literally falls apart without.

🏠 Shelter

Not luxury—safety.

  • Protection from weather

  • A place to sleep

  • A place to cook & clean

  • Stability (doesn’t have to be permanent)

This can be:

  • Apartment

  • RV

  • Shared housing

  • Tiny home

  • House

Biblically: “Daily bread” includes a place to rest.

đź’§ Food & Water

Not excess—nutrition.

  • Enough calories

  • Clean drinking water

  • Simple meals done consistently

You do not need:

  • Eating out

  • Perfect organic everything

  • Trend diets

You do need:

  • Regular meals

  • Protein, carbs, fats

  • Consistency

đź‘• Clothing

Not fashion—function.

  • Weather-appropriate

  • Clean

  • Safe for work/play/sleep

Kids need:

  • Fewer clothes than culture tells you

  • More freedom than outfits

🩺 Basic Health

Not elite care—access.

  • Emergency care access

  • Preventative basics

  • Rest

  • Hygiene

Often overlooked:

  • Sleep

  • Stress reduction

  • Emotional safety

2. Stabilizers (what keeps life from becoming chaos)

These don’t keep you alive today—but they keep you alive long-term.

đźš— Transportation

Not new—reliable.

  • One functioning vehicle

  • Or consistent public transit

Transportation equals:

  • Work

  • Community

  • Food access

  • Emergency response

đź’Ľ Income (or provision)

Not abundance—predictability.

  • Enough to cover basics

  • Some margin (even small)

  • Not living in constant panic

This can be:

  • Job

  • Multiple small streams

  • Community support

  • Ministry + bivocational work

Scripture never promises wealth—it promises provision.

👨‍👩‍👧 Relationships & Community

This is a real need.

A family needs:

  • At least one trusted outside relationship

  • Someone who can help in crisis

  • Spiritual covering or emotional support

Isolation kills families faster than poverty.

đź“– Meaning & Direction

This is where most families are starving.

You need:

  • A shared “why”

  • Values you agree on

  • Hope beyond the next bill

Without this:

  • Even wealthy families collapse

  • Kids feel unsafe

  • Parents burn out

3. What We Think We Need (but usually don’t)

This is where culture lies.

❌ Multiple cars
❌ Constant upgrades
❌ Big houses
❌ Packed schedules
❌ Subscriptions everywhere
❌ Status purchases
❌ Being “ahead” of others

Most stress comes from supporting a lifestyle that doesn’t support your soul.

4. The Biblical Summary (simple, powerful)

“If we have food and clothing, with these we will be content.”
—1 Timothy 6:8

And Jesus adds:

“Seek first the Kingdom… and these things will be added.”
—Matthew 6:33

Not everything.
These things.

5. The Honest Bottom Line

A three-person family needs:

âś” Safety
âś” Food
âś” Rest
âś” Love
âś” Purpose
âś” Community
âś” Enough money to breathe

That’s it.

Everything else is amplification, not foundation.
