Give Me a Clean Heart: The Power of Daily Surrender

We live in an RV—and somehow, it gets dirty fast.

I mean, really fast.

One moment everything feels in order, and the next you’re asking questions like: Where did this come from? Why is this here? And how did it get so messy so quickly? And when you have a baby exploring everything, pulling things out, throwing things around, discovering the world—it multiplies.

So we’ve had to learn something simple but powerful:
If we don’t schedule time to clean, the mess takes over.

And honestly… that’s how life is.

The Mess We Don’t Always See

A lot of times, we’re just living. Going through the motions. Doing what we need to do. But while we’re living, something else is happening quietly in the background:

Our hearts are collecting things.

Stress. Distractions. Wrong attitudes. Hidden thoughts. Small compromises. Emotional reactions. Things we didn’t even notice in the moment.

Before we know it, something feels off.

That’s why David prayed:

“Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.” (Psalm 51:10)

David didn’t say, “Help me clean myself.”
He said, “God, You create something clean in me.”

Because deep down, we all know—we can’t fully clean our own hearts.

The Hidden Clutter

One of the most dangerous parts about a messy heart is that some of it is hidden.

Things we don’t even recognize.

“Who can discern their own errors? Forgive my hidden faults.” (Psalm 19:12)

Just like in the RV—you didn’t even see the crumbs fall, you didn’t notice when something got misplaced—suddenly it’s there.

That’s how sin, distraction, and spiritual drift work.

Quiet. Subtle. Unnoticed.

Why Daily Cleaning Matters

If we don’t clean regularly, things don’t stay neutral—they get worse.

Scripture says:

“Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.” (Proverbs 4:23)

Everything flows from your heart—your decisions, your reactions, your focus, your direction.

So if the heart is cluttered… life gets cluttered.

If the heart is off… everything else follows.

The Solution: Daily Surrender

This is where daily surrender comes in.

Not a long, complicated routine. Not hours of trying to “get it right.”

Just a consistent, intentional return to God.

Daily surrender is daily cleaning.

It’s waking up and saying:

“God, here I am. Clean what I can’t see. Fix what I’ve ignored. Align what’s out of order.”

And one of the most powerful ways this happens is through worship.

There’s a quote often shared by Ravi Zacharias, originally from William Temple:

“Worship is the submission of all our nature to God… the quickening of conscience by His holiness… the purifying of imagination… the opening of the heart… the surrender of will to His purpose.”

That’s what worship does.

It cleans you from the inside out.

Washed by the Word

Another key part of this daily cleansing is the Word of God.

“…having been cleansed by the washing of water with the word.” (Ephesians 5:26)

When you start your day in God’s Word, something happens.

Your mind gets clear.
Your spirit gets aligned.
Your heart gets washed.

It’s not about checking a box—it’s about being renewed.

What Happens When the Heart Is Clean?

Jesus said:

“Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.” (Matthew 5:8)

When your heart is clean, you can see clearly.

You can hear God better.
You can recognize His direction.
You can respond the way He intended.

You begin to function the way you were created to function.

Draw Near, Daily

This isn’t a one-time moment. It’s a daily rhythm.

“Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you… cleanse your hands… purify your hearts…” (James 4:8)

Every day, we come back.

Every day, we surrender.

Every day, we let God clean what we cannot.

Final Thought

If I don’t clean the RV, eventually it becomes a place that’s hard to live in.

And if I don’t surrender daily, my heart becomes a place that’s hard for God to move in.

But when I come to Him—consistently, honestly, daily—
He doesn’t just clean me…

He restores me.
