Barbed Lessons: What Holds Us When Life Presses In

It’s 5 a.m.

I’m sitting in a parking lot—alone.

My wife and baby are safe at my parents’ house.

And me?

I’m here because something broke.

Ford Fuel filter (cut) from a 1998 gulf-stream stream Sunsport

The Breakdown That Led to a Revelation

Yesterday, I thought I had it figured out.

The RV kept shutting off while idling, so I replaced the idle air control valve (IAC).

It should’ve worked.

But it didn’t.

So I moved to the fuel filter… and that’s when things got real.

The filter wouldn’t budge. No clips. No leverage.

Finally—I had to cut it out.

Now I’m stuck. Waiting. Rebuilding. Thinking.

And in the middle of all that…

One word stood out:

Barbed.

What Does “Barbed” Actually Mean? (Etymology)

The word barb comes from the Latin word barba, meaning “beard.”

Over time, it came to describe:

The sharp point on an arrow or hook Something that catches and holds

By the 14th century, barbed was used to describe:

a point or projection angled backward so it resists being removed

Why That Matters

A barbed connector in a fuel line has ridges.

You can push the hose onto it…

But you can’t easily pull it off.

Why?

Because it’s designed to hold under pressure.

Barbed Moments in Life

And that’s when it hit me:

Life has barbed moments too.

Moments that:

Catch you Slow you down Refuse to let you move forward easily

Like:

Being stuck in a parking lot at 5 a.m. Financial pressure Plans falling apart Unexpected breakdowns

They’re not smooth.

They’re sharp.

But God Uses the Barbs

Scripture tells us:

“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose.”

Romans 8:28

Even this moment.

Even this breakdown.

Even this inconvenience.

God is working.

Barbed Truths That Keep Us From Slipping

Just like a barbed fitting keeps a hose from slipping under pressure…

God gives us truths that anchor us.

1. Scripture is Barbed

“I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.”

Psalms 119:11

When you memorize Scripture, it grips your soul.

When pressure comes—you don’t slip.

2. Trials Are Barbed

“Consider it pure joy… whenever you face trials… because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance.”

James 1:2–3

Trials don’t just hurt.

They build grip.

3. God’s Love is Barbed

“Who shall separate us from the love of Christ?”

Romans 8:35

Once you’ve encountered His love…

It holds you.

Not All Barbed Moments Hurt

Some barbed moments are beautiful:

Your wedding day The birth of your child A breakthrough A prayer answered

These moments mark you too.

They become anchors of joy.

What I Realized at 5 A.M.

I’m not just fixing a fuel line.

I’m living a lesson.

This moment—this inconvenience—is a barbed moment.

It’s shaping me.

Holding me.

Teaching me.

Final Thought

You might be in a barbed moment right now.

Something uncomfortable.

Something unexpected.

Don’t rush past it.

Because this might be the very thing

that keeps you from slipping later.

Call to Action

Take a moment today:

What has God used to anchor you? What scriptures are holding you right now? What moments shaped your faith?

Write them down.

Memorize them.

Live them.

Because when pressure comes…

You’ll need something barbed enough to hold you steady.

you know else that’s a barb? praise and worship! And we’ll get into that soon enough
